ボイスメカニクスシリーズは、 声が持つ「機能性」と「呪術性」という二つの面をモチーフとして開発されたナンセンスマシーンです。

声の「機能性」

声が出るプロセスは、大きく四つあります( 図２）。

１　空気の流れを作る・・・・・・・ブロアー（Blower ）
２　音を発生する・・・・・・・・・・・ソース (source)
３　音色をかえる・・・・・・・・・フィルター(filter)
４　「１，２，３」を制御する・・・コントロール(control)
多くの楽器は、音の発生の段階（＝ソース）で、正しい音程が出るように調律されています。しかし声を楽器として見た場合、「正しい音程」が決まっていなく、とてもルーズです。また音色を変える（＝フィルター）では、舌や歯やくちびるなどを使い、言語のような複雑な音色の変化を行います。

こうしたしくみはすべてやわらかい「筋肉」でできており、その微妙な動きは「脳」によってコントロールされています。このような生物の持つ発声のしくみを、無機物で構成された機械で再現することは、とても興味深いエンジニアリングです( 図３）。

感情をしばる「呪術性」

声という音には「呪術性」があり、簡単に人間の感情をゆすぶることができます。たとえば、犬の吠える声を聞くと人間は警戒します。赤ん坊の笑い声を聞けばやさしい気分になります。また音程の変化のある歌声を聞けば、さまざまな喜怒哀楽の感情が生まれます。この声の持つ「呪術性」は、理性を超えた不可思議なものですが、声そのものは「機能性」もった機械という理性で再現できます( 図４）。

この「機能性」と「呪術性」という両面性は、たとえば「魚器シリーズ」の名前に表れている「魚（呪術性）+ 器（機能性）」や、EDELWEISS シリーズの「EDEL（機能性）+WEISS（呪術性）のように、明和電機のナンセンスマシーンがつねに持っている特徴です。

 

さまざまな声の機械の開発

現在、ボイスメカニクスシリーズとして、以下のようなさまざまな声を発生する機械を作っています。

・「歌声」を再現する機械・・セーモンズ、オタマトーン
・「犬の吠える声」を再現する機械・ディンゴ、バウガン
・「笑い声」を再現する機械・・・・ワッハゴーゴー

このほかに空気制御の実験として「ピアメカ」のような楽器の開発も行っています。また、オタマトーンのように、大量生産することで大衆への普及を行い、今日の情報化・電子化する楽器たちの中で、メカニカルなしくみの新しい楽器の可能性を広げています。

Voice Mechanics series

Voice Mechanics series are nonsense machines that were invented as motifs of two voice’saspects: “functionality” and “magicness”.

functionality” as an musical instrument There are mainly four processes for vocalization(fig.1):
⒈ creating the flow of air・・・・・・・・・・・”Blower”
⒉ producing a sound・・・・・・・・・・・・・”Source”
⒊ changing a tone・・・・・・・・・・・・・・”Filter”
⒋ controlling the processes 1,2 and 3 ・・・・・”Control”
During the process of “producing a sound” (“source”), most of musical instruments are tuned to produce sounds in right musical intervals. On the other hand, voice is very inaccurate since there is no definition of “right musical intervals” in it. Also, during the process of “changing a tone” (“filter”), people change the sounds into various tones just like languages by using tongues and teethes.
These mechanisms are all functioned by the work of soft “muscles” and the delicate movement is controlled by “brain”. It is very interesting engineering to reproduce creature’s sound producing mechanism with machines constructed with an inorganic substance(fif.3).
magicness” that restricts emotions Voice that has “magicness” in it can easily stimulate feelings in people. For instance, people get cautious when they hear a dog roaring and people get warm feeling when they hear a baby laughing. Also, people get variety of emotions when they hear a singing voice with various tone changes. This “magicness” of voice is beyond reason and very mysterious. However, the voice itself can be reproduced by reason as machine with “functionality”(fig.4). These two aspects of voice, “functionality” and ”magicness”, are always features of Meiwa Denki’s nonsense machines just like you can see on the name of our products such as “NA(=magicness) + KI(=functioality)” in NAKI series an  “EDEL(=functionality) + WEISS(magicness)” in EDELWEISS series.

Moreover, we are developing an musical instrument ” Piamecha” as an experiment of controlling air. Also, we are trying to spread our products to the general public by largescale production and develop the possibility of new musical instruments with interesting mechanical systems in current computerized and electronized ones.
